A replica of the original cross erected by Bartholomeu Diaz at Kwaaihoek in 1844

Volo Shipwreck

The Norwegian barque, Volo was wrecked here on 16 May 1896. Unfortunately there is no wreckage to be seen. However Clive Gardner’s home, The Barracks, has as it’s front door two of the barque’s doors, presumably from the captain’s cabin. His grandfather helped the survivors salvage as much as they could and provided accommodation, as did all those in Bushmans River Mouth at the time.
