Few motorists recognize this tranquil and untouched gem hidden between the cliffs and ravines as they go past. This farm, now abundant in game, was home to the first white man in the North West Province. It is here that the notorious Coenraad de Buys lived while fleeing from the British authorities in 1815. He later traveled further north and settled in the Soutpans mountain range, in the now Limpopo province. But the historical importance of Fort Buis does not stop with Coenraad de Buys. According to legend the Voortrekker, Hendrik Jacobus van der Merwe, settled himself on the farm Buisfontein in 1837, two weeks after the founding of Klerksdorp. Years later a feud developed over the right of ownership of the farm. In 1855 Van der Merwe had to obtain an affidavit from Jacob de Clercq, who was appointed as magistrate in this area from 1839. (The city of Klerksdorp was named after Jacob de Clerq) It was at this time that H.J van der Merwe sold the farm to his son, also H.J van der Merwe and his son-in-law, P.F Ernst for 8 000 rix-dollar, The families lived on the farm for many more years to come.
