Set amidst the Fynbos Floral Kingdom in the heart of the Klein Karoo, rests The valley of shadows . Amathunzi Game Lodge offers you an out of Africa experience in superb luxury. Rich in heritage, the Lodge is situated within 3500 hectares of indigenous African bush, The Klein Karoo is an internationally recognised biodiversity region, with abundant bird life and unique Fynbos . In close proximity to Amathunzi is the world renowned Karoo National Botanical Garden, Winefarms, Studfarms, Breede River and Cape Town is only 90 minutes away. The main lodge of Amathunzi, consisting of restaurant and bar, overlooks the picturesque water hole framed in the distance by the Langeberg Mountains Range. Enjoy true culinary delights prepared by our chef, whilst listening to the sounds of the African night. Amathunzi has embarked on an extensive game reintroduction programme, with Springbok, Black Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Grey Rhebok, Duiker, Steenbok, Grysbok and Klipspringer successfully reintroduced. Trials are underway at present for the reintroduction of Zebra, Kudu, Bontebok, Eland, Bushbuck and Giraffe.

.Set amidst spectacular mountains and fynbos in the Robertson Karoo, Amathunzi Private Nature Reserve offers 3 000 ha of unspoilt peace and tranquility, just 90 minutes from Cape Town.

The veldt offers a fascinating diversity of succulent Karoo plants, bulbs and geophytes, whilst the dry river beds are home to acacia and sand olive trees. Each season brings its own highlights, with spring providing a colourful carpet of flowers.

Game species include eland, gemsbok, red hartebeest, kudu, black wildebeest and springbok, along with smaller antelope like steenbok, klipspringer and duiker. The elusive Cape Mountain Leopard regularly passes through the property, whilst aardvark activity is often observed.

For birdwatchers a visit should be very rewarding, given the abundance of water on the reserve. Species include the Black Harrier, Spoonbills, Hamerkop, Pale Chanting Goshawk, the Malachite Sunbird and various owls. Recently we have introduced fish into the dams.

Accommodation

Lodge & Chalets:
The spacious main lodge and five chalets overlook a picturesque dam and guests can enjoy their meals whilst watching the game drinking.

Dinner in summer will often be served in the boma under a truly magnificent African sky, whilst winter dining is in front of the fireplace.
We offer a fully catered experience shaped around individual requests.

Our thatched chalets are fitted with under floor heating and wood-burning fireplaces for winter, whilst ceiling fans and a secluded pool area provides relief from the summer heat.

Manor House:
Totally removed and secluded from the lodge, the manor house has five spacious bedrooms (all en-suite) and a large living area which extends onto a large veranda and stone-clad swimming pool. The layout makes it ideal for two families to share.

The house overlooks a dam which is regularly frequented by game. It is fully equipped, although guests can choose to enjoy prepared meals at the lodge.

Cottage:
The 1-bedroomed cottage, with a sleeper couch in the lounge, is fully equipped and offers self-catering facilities for a small family.

Directions

TRAVELLING FROM CAPE TOWN: You will be traveling on the N1 via Du Toitskloof tunnel. Turn RIGHT to Rawsonville after the Du Toitskloof pass. Turn right at the first Rawsonville turn-off and travel through the town; follow the directions to Worcester/Villiersdorp. +- 10 km after Rawsonville the road takes a sharp LEFT turn (before nekkies resort), cross the bridge over the Breede River. 3 km after bridge turn RIGHT onto the R43 to Villiersdorp. After 9.2 km km take the Scherpenheuwel/Amathunzi turn off to the left. (just past the aan-De-Doorns Wine cellar on the right hand side – DON"T turn onto the overhex/Robertson Rd just before the cellar, the turnoff is 1km further- marked Scherpenheuwel/Amathunzi.) TAKE NOTE: Do NOT make use of this turn-off after heavy rains during winter – the low water bridge might be flooded!!! – USE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE BELOW Travel for 8 km and over the low water bridge over the Breede river; turn LEFT at T-junction (Amathunzi sign). Another 5 km and you will find the Robertson/Amathunzi turn-off to the RIGHT onto a gravel road. ( Robertson/Roodekleigat Rd) Continue on the gravel road for 8 km till the Amathunzi entrance to your right. Enter through thatched entrance. PLEASE TAKE CAUTION AT THE CATTLE GRID. After entering, take the road straight across to Main lodge & Reception or keep right to go to the Manor House, Cottage and Managers’ House. (wooden signs will help with direction). Entrance to Manor House: Past the cottage, turn left at stone wall and olive grove.
